Angela Crawley MP and Christina McKelvie MSP have this week welcomed over £800,000 in funding from the Scottish Government and South Lanarkshire Council intended to regenerate Hamilton town centre.

The investment will help turn the old Hamilton Advertiser building, the derelict Vogue Cinema site and the vacant Poundstretcher store in to modern social housing.

In partnership with the Hamilton Business Improvement District, both the Council and Clyde Valley Housing Association will work with the Scottish Government bring the vacant properties back into use.

This investment comes alongside the ongoing parking review and the Council’s town centre action plan.

Redeveloping Hamilton town centre and encouraging town centre living where proposed by Angela and Christina in their “Our town, Your Voice” report.

Their report, published in 2016, consulted with almost 2,000 of the town’s residents and made a number of recommendations for change – many of which are included in the council’s action plan.

“All three projects will increase the footfall within Hamilton, improve the image of the town and provide much needed additional social housing.

“Since the new administration took control of South Lanarkshire Council a few years ago, there has been a real drive to regenerate our town centres and implement the recommendations within our action plan.

“This, alongside the parking review, proves that we are serious about bringing people, business and jobs back to Hamilton.”
