Transport review welcomed

Lanark and Hamilton East MP Angela Crawley has welcomed the findings of the second Strategic Transport Projects Review (STPR2).

The review makes 45 recommendations under six key themes which seek to make transport in Scotland more sustainable and support people to make better, more informed choices on how they travel.

When implemented, the changes and measures will play a key role in helping to make the country fairer and greener – by tackling tackle climate change, reducing inequalities and improving health and wellbeing.

Improvements in South Lanarkshire, which is part of the Glasgow City Region, could potentially include active freeways and cycle parking hubs, rail freight improvements and the introduction of a Clyde Metro.

STPR2 will inform transport investment in Scotland for the next 20 years (2022-2042) by providing evidence-based recommendations on which Scottish Ministers can base future transport investment decisions.

Commenting, Lanark and Hamilton East MP Angela Crawley said:

“This review is a significant step forward and will help in creating a green recovery from Covid-19 which will set us on a path to delivering a fair and just transition to Net Zero.

“Hamilton is set to be included in a new Clyde Metro which will improve links to Glasgow and the rest of the city region opening up new and exciting opportunities for the community.

“There are also plans to help shift transport patterns away from cars towards active travel which will not only be beneficial for the environment but also for people’s health and wellbeing.

“That includes ways to make the road network a safer place for cyclists and pedestrians as well as a move to 20-minute neighbourhoods so people won’t have to travel as far for the things they need.”
