Angela to host social security advice event

Lanark and Hamilton East MP Angela Crawley will host a social security advice event at the Larkhall & District Volunteer Group on 14 July between 10am and 12noon.

In preparation for the roll out of Universal Credit, and to assist constituents with the ongoing welfare reforms, Angela has teamed up with the Citizens Advice Bureau and Money Matters to make sure her constituents are ready for the change.

Universal Credit is due for implementation in South Lanarkshire later this year which means changes to the way benefits payments are administered and received.

Last week, Angela raised her concerns about the way Universal Credits are being implemented in a debate on the Queens Speech in Westminster.

It has also been reported that more than £10 billion in social security payments go unclaimed every year across the UK.

Commenting, Angela said: “throughout my time as a Member of Parliament, I have sought to be as effective and hardworking as I possibly can.

“I know from speaking to constituents that the social security system is complex and often intimidating.

“The fact that £10 billion of much needed support is missed out on a year is shocking and I know that some of my constituents living in poverty go without the support they need and deserve.

“To tackle this problem, I have joined with two excellent advice services that will be on hand to help those that require support.

“I am holding this event for anyone who requires advice, support or feels they may be entitled to social security than they currently receive.

“It is free, open to all and there is no appointment necessary.”
