Lanark and Hamilton East MP Angela Crawley has said the voter registration deadline for the EU referendum must be extended following technical problems with the website last night.
As a result of a late surge in those attempting to register to vote, users reported being unable to register as the deadline approached and the website crashed.
A number of MPs have lodged urgent questions asking the Government to consider extending the deadline and the Electoral Commission have said they would support such a change in legislation to allow the extension to go ahead.
Commenting, Angela said:
“The government must extend the deadline for voter registration for the EU referendum – nobody should be denied their opportunity to vote.
“I know a number of my constituents tried, but failed to sign-up last minute. This is their voice and their future. Their democratic right should not be removed because of a technical glitch.
“The time for establishing fault – and ensuring this never happens again- will come later.
“The urgent priority is to extend the deadline and ensure that everyone has the chance to exercise their democratic right.”
